Ulysses, Kansas was originally built as an urban settlement on plains full of cattle. An 1885 newspaper excitedly boasted that the cattle had been rounded up and a city developed in their place that offered a hotel with 16 rooms. Today, Ulysses is a small city consisting of just over 6,000 people. There is plenty of shopping to do and parks to visit within its borders. People here enjoy small town life and look out for one another, retaining the spirit of the pioneers that settled the area back in the 1800s. Ulysses is located within a few hundred miles of large cities in Texas, Colorado and Oklahoma, and many residents take advantage of the proximity to do some traveling on a regular basis.
Moving to Ulysses
Plan to take several months searching for places to rent in Ulysses. Whether you're looking for a studio apartment, rental homes or two-bedroom apartments for rent, you're sure to find a new home at a reasonable price. However, since Ulysses is only 3.26 square miles altogether, it could take some time finding that perfect place, as inventory is low. Do some reconnaissance and visit apartment complexes to find out when housing is likely to become available.
To land the perfect apartment, get your documentation together to prove you are the perfect tenant -- and better than the competition -- before you start looking. Rents are fairly inexpensive in Ulysses, but you'll still need to prove that you can actually pay your rent on time every month. In most cases, three or four pay stubs should be enough. You'll also need proof of your identity such as a driver's license and Social Security card. Landlords will also use this information to check your credit prior to approving your rental application, so make sure you take care of any errors or omissions before you apply!
Neighborhoods
Ulysses is a small town that does not have any separate neighborhoods or subdivisions, but it still has plenty to offer for those looking for a variety of activities and amenities. Residents enjoy spending their days shopping and hanging out with neighbors downtown while their kids are at school. Ulysses is located close to the borders of Oklahoma and Colorado, so people who want to get out of town often take a trip across state lines.
Living in Ulysses
If you choose to live in Ulysses, you will become part of a close-knit community with a rich history. Ulysses was settled just after the Civil War -- in fact, it is named after Ulysses S. Grant. People in Ulysses celebrate their history in a variety of ways. There are two local museums -- the Grant County Museum and the Historic Adobe Museum, and there are nods to Ulysses' history at free state and county festivals hosted there each spring. You can also visit the Old Ulysses Town Site to see where settlers originally built the town, how they lived and just how the heck they moved an entire town across a prairie at the turn of the 20th century.
There's plenty else to do if you are not particularly interested in history. Ulysses is home to several golf courses and golf has a large following here. Fore! The city is also located near a Frazier Lake, which features walking trails that allow you to get lost in nature. (But don't get literally lost. That's not good.)
Don't mistake Ulysses for a stereotypical small town. In addition to plenty of shopping, museums and local festivals, Ulysses is close to several colleges and universities. It is a two-hour drive to Amarillo, TX, which features a large college and a thriving technological industry.
