Set on the "thumb" of the state of Michigan (where it protrudes into Lake Huron) is the charming rural town of Bad Axe. It's farm country, with agriculture being the driving force in the area's economy. Lake Huron County Airport sits at the south of town and provides limited aviation services. It's a short drive to the shores of either Saginaw Bay or Lake Huron, and just over 100 miles north of Detroit. It's classic small-town Americana. It's a beautiful region, with the bounty of nature nearby and the conveniences of modern life close.
Moving to Bad Axe
Should you decide to make your own camp - or home - in Bad Axe, there's no need to bring any tree-chopping hardware with you. You can choose from a variety of house rentals or a nice two-bedroom apartment for rent without too much of a problem. There are enough places to offer choices to renters, without so many that it indicates a problem - although, because it's such a small town, it's wise to begin your search as soon as possible. Like any small town, the best offers might come and go, depending on the season and how the local economy is doing. Try to take advantage when your favorite place is up for rent.
Neighborhoods in Bad Axe
With a population of just over 3,000 people, there aren't too many uniquely defined neighborhoods. That said, there are parts of town where it's better to start your search for an apartment to rent in Bad Axe.
Northwest: The northwest area has a lot of single-family homes where you can find a home or even a room to rent. It's also where you will find the largest apartment complex in town.
South: Down on the south side near the airport are homes with larger lots, as the town gives way to farmland.
Downtown: Here in the historic downtown, you'll find boutique shops and chain stores that help form the commercial hub of the Thumb area.
Living in Bad Axe
A look at Pioneer Log Cabin Village will take you back to the roots of the area. A restored log cabin, blacksmith shop, general store, barn, one-room schoolhouse and chapel set the stage. The Huron Community Fair, held each August, is everything you would expect from a small-town fair. The nearby waters of Lake Huron shape life here as well, from the chill of lake-effect snow to hot summer days on the beach. You won't have too many options when it comes to dancing the night away, but if small-town America is what you are looking for, then Bad Axe is a great place to look for apartment homes and houses.
